ANSI HPS-N2.1-2011 pdf download Radiation Symbol
1.0 Scope This standard designates a radiation symbol that shall be used to signify the actual or potential presence of ionizing radiation and to identify objects, devices, materials, or combinations of materials that emit or potentially emit ionizing radiation. This standard does not specify the radiation levels at which the symbol is to be used.
2.0 Normative References There are no normative references for implementation of this standard. See Section 8.0 for informative references.
3.0 Definitions Radiation: As used in this standard, radia- tion means ionizing radiation. Radiation, ionizing: Any electromagnetic or particulate radiation capable of producing ions, directly or indirectly, by interaction with matter. Note: In the fields of regulation and radiation protection (and in this standard), visible and ultraviolet light, lasers, micro- waves, radiofrequency waves, ultrasound, and magnetic fields (e.g., nuclear magnetic resonance) are excluded. Shall: Indicates a requirement. Should: Indicates a recommendation.
4.0 Shape and Proportions of Radiation Symbol
4.1 The radiation symbol shall be designed and proportioned as illustrated in Fig. 1 .
4.2 The symbol should be of a size consistent with the size of equipment or material to which it is applied and be consistent with the symbol’s intended function, but in any case, it shall be identifiable from a safe distance.
4.3 Except when circumstances do not permit, the symbol should be oriented with one blade pointed downward and centered on the vertical axis.
5.0 Use of Symbol
5.1 The radiation symbol shall be used or displayed only: (1 ) To signify the actual or potential presence of ionizing radiation. (2) For illustrative purposes in appro- priate educational (e.g., books, technical references) or informa- tional matter, but not for any other purpose such as decorative use. When the symbol is used for illustrative purposes, it should be used in a manner that will avoid any confusion or implication that radia- tion is present. Examples of misuse are provided in Annex A.
