All containers shall be capable of being supported by their bottom corner fittings only. Containers with all their intermediate transverse members spaced 1000 mm apart or less (or having a flat underside) shall be deemed to comply with this requirement.
The base structure of containers not having transverse members spaced 1000 mm apart or less (and not having a flat underside) shall be in accordance with Appendix B.
All containers shall he capable of being supported only by load transfer areas in their base structure.
All containers shall have end transverse members and sufficient intermediate load transfer areas (or a flat underside) of sufficient strength to permit vertical load transfer to or from the longitudinal members of a carrying vehicle.
NOTE: Such longitudinal members are assumed to lie within the two 250 mm wide zones defined
by the broken lines in Figure Bi, Appendix B.
The lower faces of the load transfer areas in the container base structure, including those of the end transverse members, shall be in one plane located 12.5 +5, —1.5 mm above the plane of the lower faces of the bottom corner fittings of the container (base plane).
Apart from the bottom corner fittings and bottom side rail, no part of the container shall project below this plane. Double plates may be provided in the vicinity of the bottom corner fittings to afford protection to the undcrstructure.
Such plates shall not extend more than 550 mm from the outer end and not more than 470 mm from the side faces of the bottom corner fittings, and their lower faces shall be at least 5 mm above the base plane of the container.
For all containers under dynamic conditions, or the static equivalent of having a load uniformly distributed over the floor in such a way that the combined mass of the container and the test load is equal to 2R — T, no part of the base of the container shall deflect more than 25 mm below the base plane of the container.
5.5 Side structure—Platform-based containers
For all platform-based containers, the longitudinal deflection of the top of the container with respect to the bottom of the container when under full longitudinal rigidity test conditions shall not exceed 42 mm.
5.6 Walls and securing devices
Container end walls shall withstand Test No. 2 of Clause 6.4. Alternatively, means shall be provided for securing the cargo to the base structure in such a manner that the cargo does not transmit longitudinal forces to the ends.
Where openings are provided in end walls, the ability of these walls to withstand the test of Clause 6.4 shall not be impaired.
Where the containers do not have sidewalls, adequate means shall be provided to permit the securing of the cargo against lateral movement.
Cargo-securing devices shall meet the requirements of Appendix C.
5.7 Doors
Doors need not be provided.
5.8 Lifting requirements
5.8.1 Forklift pockets
Where forklift pockets are provided for lifting in the unloaded condition only, the container shall be marked accordingly. The forklift pockets shall meet the dimensional requirements specified in Appendix D and shall pass completely through the base structure of the container so that lifting devices may be inserted from either side. The base of the forklift pockets shall be provided near each end of the forklift pockets, but need not be the full width of the container.
5.8.3 Gooseneck tunnels
Gooseneck tunnels may be provided as an optional feature. The dimensions of gooseneck
tunnels shall be in accordance with Appendix G.
5.8.4 Nesting requirements
Containers shall be capable of being positively locked, or located together in a nest, by substantial locating pins or fitments between each tier which prevent movement in transit.
Locking pins shall be simple to operate with a positive lock in both the engaged and disengaged positions. Their state of engagement shall be able to be readily observed.
A permanent marking that clearly indicates the method of operation shall be clearly displayed adjacent to each locking pin.
A permanent marking shall be displayed on each side of the container to indicate that all locking pins shall be engaged between each tier in a nest.
When locking pins are not used and containers are located by fitments, other means shall be provided to ensure that fitments remain securely engaged in transit.AS 4615.2 pdf download.
