1 SCOPE. This specification applies to hot-dip galvanized coating on steel bolts, screws, nuts, and other fasteners having BSW or UNC threads, in the nominal size range ‘/ in to 1 /2 in diameter inclusive.
It governs the purity of the galvanizing bath, the appearance of the coating under visual examination, the weight of the coating, the uniformity and adhesion of the coating, the fit of the threads on the finished articles and the test methods to be adopted.
It does not deal with the dimensions or physical properties of fasteners, depending for these on reference to relevant specifications.
NOTES:
I. The term ‘re1evant specification’ refers to a specification covering the dimensions and physical properties of these fasteners as required by the purchaser. This may be an Australian standard (e.g. AS B 1(K), B 117, B 147, B I 4X or B 157), a British standard, an A men can standard, or any other specification cited by the purchaser.
2. After galvanizing, fasteners must meet the physical requirements of their relevant specifications when sampled and tested in accordance with the requirements specified therein.
2 DEFINITIONS. For the purpose of this specification, the following definitions apply:
Hot-dip galvanized coating-a coating obtained by dipping prepared steel articles in molten ZInc.
Manufacturer—
(a)a person, persons or organization responsible for the manufacture of the uncoated fastener’
(b) a person, persons or organization responsible for the manufacture of the fastener and for the mechanical properties of the fastener after coating.
Galvanizer-a person, persons or organization responsible for the coating of the fastener with zinc.
3 PROCESS. Galvanizing shall be carried out by the hot-dip process. The molten zinc in the galvanizing bath shall contain not less than 98.5 per cent of zinc by weight, and the temperature of the bath shall not exceed 455°C(851°F).AS B193-1970 pdf download.
