MI exposed rotating shafts or other parts shall be guarded, unless the design risk assessment indicates there is no unacceptable risk to health or safety.
All exposed projections, gaps, shaft couplings, collars or similar shall be guarded.
All fluid couplings fitted with a fusible plug or bursting discs shall be provided with suitable guards to control and contain discharge of fluid in the event of the plug fusing.
2. 1 3.2.4 Hoppers and chutes
All openings to hoppers and chutes shall be suitably safeguarded where there is a risk of contacting dangerous parts or of personnel falling into the opening. Hoppers or chutes shall be provided with access or openings so that, as far as possible, any necessary cleaning or inspection can be carried out from outside the hopper or chute.
The sides of open hoppers or chutes shall be high enough or fitted with containment measures to prevent material falling onto working areas below. Open chutes should be provided with containment devices at the point where conveyors discharge into them to prevent materials from bouncing out of the chute. Loading, unloading and discharge points’
Wherever a person has access to a loading, unloading, work station, transfer or discharge point, guards in the form of guard-rails, fences or close fitting guards shall be installed to prevent injury to that person, except for applications where the design risk assessment has established it is not reasonably practicable and alternative risk controls are implemented. Where a hazard can he created by the material being conveyed falling into or being projected into an accessible area, then safeguards shall be provided. Consideration should be given to the height, mass, size, speed and other properties of the material being conveyed (see Figure 2.4).
2.13.3 Safeguarding methods Design of safeguards
Safeguards shall he designed to restrict access to danger zones and to enable routine activities (e.g. adjustments, lubrication, maintenance, inspection, testing and cleaning) to be carried out without opening or removing the guards.
Safeguards shall be designed to make by-passing or disabling, whether deliberately or by accident, as difficult as is reasonably practicable.
Guards and protective devices shall be designed to be suitable for the intended use, taking into account mechanical and other hazards involved. Guards and protective devices shall be compatible with the working enviromnent of the conveyor and designed so that they cannot be easily defeated. They shall provide the minimum possible interference with activities during operation and other phases of the conveyor lifecycle, in order to reduce any incentive to defeat them.

2. 1 3.3.6 Removable guards not interlocked
Removable guards not interlocked shall only be removable with the use of tools that are typically only available to competent personnel.
Removable guards shall be designed so that they can be easily reinstalled and are not prone to damage.
Where removable guards without interlocks are designed to be readily removable, an emergency stop system readily accessible shall be installed where reasonably practicable, such as a pull wire (see Clause Guarding alternatives
As an alternative to guards, pop-out rollers or dead plates which, when operating, allow a minimum clearance of 120 mm to he maintained, may be provided. The force required to operate such devices shall not exceed 110 N (see Figure 2.5).
Where the surface of the moving part of the conveyor is provided with projections exceeding 6 mm in height or where there is any type of’ attachment to the moving part, the minimum clearance of’ 120 mm shall be maintained between the highest point of the projection and the fixed equipment.AS NZS 4024.3610 pdf download.
