BS/EN 12130-2018 pdf download.Feather and down – Test methods-Determination of the fill power ( massic volume ).
— Heater: 1 400 W to 1 800 W
— Nozzle: single flow, sprayer style, 0,2 mm, steam temperature of 105°C at the nozzle.
5.6 Stop watch.
5.7 Balance, sensitive to 0,05 g.
5.8 Conditioning box, with the following dimensions:
— Size: (400 ± 50) mm in width, (400 ± 50) mm in depth and (400 ± 50) mm in height;
— Mesh: Metal or nylon mesh with 1,00 mm to 1,19 mm opening.
5.9 Dryer, from 1 500 W up to 2 200 W of nominal power, non-ionizing.
6 Preparation and conditioning of sample and equipment
6.1 Method A: Steam conditioning
6.1.1 Place a well-mixed representative sample of (40 ± 2) g plumage in the conditioning box. Loosen the plumage in the box with a wooden stick to loosen clumps or matted down.
6.1.2 After closing the cover, blow steam to one surface for 10 s and to four surfaces for 80 s, 2 x 10 s on each side of the box. Steaming should be done in a circular movement on each side to evenly steam the sample. Additional steam is still required if the sample is not damp.
6.1.3 Wait for (5 ± 2) mm. Bring the dryer as close to the mesh as possible and blow hot air to one surface for 30 s in a circular movement and to four surfaces for at least 2 mm in total, then blow hot air to one surface for 15 sand to four surfaces for at least I mm in total.
6.1.4 Condition the sample for at least 48 h in a conditioning box In a climate conditioned room as defined In EN ISO 139 (standard atmosphere).
6.1.5 Prepare and condition a second sample in accordance with 6.1.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.3 and 6.1.4.
6.2 Method B: Tumble dry
6.2.1 Place a test sample of at least 50 g in a cotton bag (recommended size 50 cm x 60 cm, with a zipper closure) plain weave (100 g/m2 to 150 g/m2). The cotton bag shall be used only once.
6.2.3 After tumble drying, place the test sample in a suitable container and condition it In the atmosphere as defined in EN ISO 139 (standard atmosphere), controlling the relative humidity in accordance with EN 20187 by storing it loose to a maximum height of 150 mm in a conditioning box (5.8) for at least 48 h.
6.2.4 Prepare and condition a second sample in accordance with 6.2.1. 6.2.2 and 6.2.3.
6.3 Method C: Box conditioning
6.3.1 A well-mixed representative of two samples of about 25 g filling material is placed in a cylinder and is closed with a cover with blow nozzle (see Figure 3). Air is blown into the cylinder for (60 ± 5) s through the blow nozzle. The valve opening of the blow nozzle is adjusted to a maximum air flow.
6.3.2 After blowing the filling material, the test sample shall be placed carefully in a container for conditioning it for at least 48 h in an atmosphere as defined in Iso 139 (standard atmosphere)
6.3.3 Prepare and condition a second sample in accordance with 6.3.1 and 6.3.2.
7 Procedure
7.1 Test fill power inside the climatic room according to EN ISO 139 (standard atmosphere).
7.2 Ensure that the cylinder is vertical, by adjusting the legs, and that the balance is level.
7.3 After 30 measurements (15 test specimens), clean inside the cylinder with warm water prepared with anionic-active detergent (concentration: 0,4 mI/I). followed by two rinses with cold distilled water.
7.4 Weigh out (30,0 ± 0,1) g of one test specimen extracted from the sample and place it in the cylinder. The sample should have as little contact with hands as possible.
7.5 Do not compress material during filling of the cylinder or weighing.
7.6 Manual procedure
7.6.1 After filling the cylinder, loosen the material in the container as follows: hold the wooden rods from the very top and place the rods against the wall of the cylinder until the bottom has been reached. Loosen the down by raising the rods against the opposite wall of the cylinder with a short, slow diagonal shaking motion. Repeat this process five times starting in different places along the wall of the cylinder.
NOTE Be careful not to damage the cylinder while using the wooden rods.BS/EN 12130-2018 pdf download.
