62 Arrangement of interior space
6.2.1 Interior clearance
The following requirement applies only to cabs without gangway or front centre access door. The longitudinal distance between the inside face of the front windscreen on a height above floor level of 1 800 mm and the nearest fixed object located behind the dnver’s seat, shall be a minimum of 1 200 mm measured in an area within a distance of 200 mm to 800 mm from either side of the longitudinal vehicle centre line. At the height of the eye point of the seated tall driver the longitudinal distance to the nearest fixed object located behind the driver’s seat shall be at least 1 500 mm, see Annex B. Figure B.1.
6.2.2 Headroom for standing
Inside the cab, headroom of at least 1 950mm shall be provided at all points accessible In the standing position. Increasing the headroom to at least 2 000 mm is recommended. The minimum height of the headroom is permitted to be 1 850 mm for the areas above the cab floor adjacent to the side walls. This area of reduced height shall not be more than 30 % of the whole cab floor area and in addition, the reduced height shall not be located above the normal driving position as defined in EN 16186-1.
For EMU/DMLJ with a windscreen inclined by less than 350 from the horizontal or with a maximum design speed greater than 190 km/h. a lower value for the headroom may also apply forward of the driver’s seat backrest: This value shall not be less than 1 700 mm along the drivers desk edge in front of the driver’s seat. In this case, driving in a standing position may not be possible. In case of a sun-blind located in conflict with this requirement, the height may be further reduced to a minimum of 1 480 mm.
6.2.3 Foot niche clearance
For the total width of the footrest, the minimum vertical clearance above the heel point shall be 660 mm (see Figure C.1). If an adjustable footrest is provided this figure Is valid for its lowest position.
6.2.4 Water tightness
The flooring should be designed to prevent mildew.
Floors shall be designed to prevent water ingress from inside the cab to the floor sub-structure.
If provided, maintenance access shall resist the entrance of water or drainage shall be provided. The above requirement is deemed to be fulfilled by the following test: water tightness can be tested by applying 10 L of water at floor level. It shall be evaluated at floor level and 10 mm above it. No water shall be found beyond the maintenance access.
6.2.5 Foot operated devices on the cab floor
If a foot operated device on the cab floor, but not underneath the desk is requested. it shall be positioned within a maximum distance of 250 mm from the wall. Irregularity and anti-slipping requirements for the walkable floor do not apply for this device.
6.3 Driver’s desk
6.3.1 Desk arrangement
The driver’s desk should be arranged to enable, in the most commonly used driving position, the driver to keep a normal posture, without hampering freedom of movement, taking into account the anthropometric data as set out in EN 16186-1.
Example of desk arrangement is presented in Figure C.1.

6.3.2 Thermal conductivity
Desk top surfaces in regular or permanent contact with body parts shall have a thermal conductivity of less than 1,0 W/(m • K). Mounting screws, document holders and other minor parts should be designed not to be in permanent contact with body parts. Those parts of control devices within the desk top to be intended for operating the control device shall have a thermal conductivity of less than 0,4 W/(m. K), In case of heated surfaces higher values are acceptable.
6.4 Storage space
6.4.1 General
Suitable storage for equipment should be located in the cab. The design should take into account any risk of injury to the cab occupants. Stored clothing and personal equipment should not interfere with the driver’s duties or controls.
6.4.2 Hooks and space for personal belongings
In each cab, two hooks or a niche with a clothes rail and a free space (e.g. on the cab floor) for a suitcase or bag shall be provided.
Following minimum dimensions for the niche are recommended:
— 350 mm x 300 mm x height 1 500 mm for clothes.
