2.1 CONTROL AND INDICATING EQUIPMENT
2.1.1 Location
EWCIE and EICIE incorporating a user interface shall be installed in a location complying with the following requirements:
(a) The area shall be secure from unauthorized access. Where this is not possible the controls shall be secure from unauthorized access.
(b) The ambient noise level shall be not greater than 70 dB(A).
NOTE: This Standard expects the ambient noise level to be assessed taking into consideration the unusual circumstances of an emergency. For example, during a fire, it is expected that a fire brigade booster pump may be operating outside the building, possibly increasing the noise level in the lobby area above 70 dll(A). The lobby area in this case would be unsuitable, unless provisions were made for its acoustic isolation.
(c) Access shall not be obstructed.
(d) Operation shall not obstruct the evacuation of the building.
(e) Ambient lighting conditions shall not adversely affect the ability to interpret the state of visual indicators, and the reading of displays and labels.
(f) All controls and indicators shall be not less than 750 mm and not more than 1850mm above floor level.
(g) Equipment shall be located in an area that presents a low risk of damage to the equipment and low risk of injury to personnel in an emergency.
(h) Where the EWCIE and/or EICIE is obscured by a door, that door shall be marked in a contrasting colour to the general colour scheme with the words ‘EWIS PANEL’ or ‘EIS PANEL’ or ‘EWS PANEL’, whichever is applicable CIE in letters not less than 50 mm high. There shall he no other lettering on the door unless the door also obscures a FDCIE. The door shall not be lockable. Where the door reduces the CIE sounder sound level below the requirement, means shall be provided to give the required sound level outside the covering door.
NOTE: It is recommended that a telephone, with access to the public netork. he provided in the ricini1y of the installed location.
2.1.2 Working environment
The following requirements shall apply:
(a) Lighting In addition to the normal lighting pertaining to the area in which the CIE is installed, emergency lighting complying with AS 2293.1 shall be provided.
(b) Workspace The workspace for operational personnel shall be arranged so as to minimize distraction by peripheral activities and its plan dimensions shall be not less than those specified in Figure 2.1.
(c) Enclosure Only CIE complying with a part of AS 4428 or AS 7240 shall share a common enclosure or be mounted in an adjoining enclosure. Where an enclosure is shared by more than one CIE, controls shall be located separately for each CIE except common controls and indicators itemized in the EWCIE Standard AS 4428.16.
2.2 DISTRIBUTED EWCIE and EICIE PROTECTION
Distributed EWCIE and EICIE serving other than the fire compartment in which it is installed, shall be installed in an area that is free from ignition sources and stored combustible materials.
2.3 VIRING
2.3.1 General
Customer cabling, including ELV power supply wiring of the emergency warning system and emergency intercom system, shall be kept separate and distinct from all other systems not forming part of a FDAS and shall be in accordance with the requirements of AS/CA S009.
NOTE: The loudspeaker wiring carrying LV (telecommunications) signals requires separation from ELV wiring and mains power wiring (LV power) in accordance with AS/CA S009. Externally energized circuits at voltages in excess of extra low voltage, except the power source for CIE, shall not enter any CIE enclosure.
NOTE: In areas prone to severe lightning activity, CIE may require additional surge protection to wiring external to the building. This may include lightning suppression systems associated with the general building wiring.
2.3.2 Conductors
Wiring conductors shall be stranded and insulated. Two-core cables used for customer cables shall have a minimum cross-sectional area of 0.75 mrn for each conductor. Customer cables having three or more conductors shall have a cross-sectional area of not less than 0.4 mm2 for each conductor.
Where stranded and solid core data-type cables are installed between networked CIE and distributed parts of CIE within the EWIS and FDAS, the total cross-sectional area of all the conductors within the cable shall not be less than 1.5 mm.AS 1670.4 pdf download.
