ANSI BHMA A156.8-2000 pdf download AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD FOR DOOR CONTROLS – OVERHEAD STOPS AND HOLDERS
1. GENERAL
1.1 Scope
1.1.1 This Standard establishes requirements for overhead door stops and holders and includes performance tests covering operational, cyclical, strength and finish criteria.
1.1.2 Tests described in this Standard are performned under laboratory conditions. In actual usage, results vary because of installation, maintenance and environmental conditions.
1.2 Definitions (also see Section 4)
1.2.1 Overhead Holder. A device surface mounted or concealed at the top of a door with a connecting arm attached to the door frame. It holds a door in a predetermined open position or positions and also limits the opening up to 110 degrees.
1.2.2 Overhead Stops. A device surface mounted or concealed at the top of a door with a conecting arm attached to the door frame which only limits the opening travel of a door.
1.3 General Requirements
1.3.1 Values. Required values in this Standard are given in US units. SI metric equivalents given in parentheses are approximate. Where tolerances are not indicated, values are subject to a 2% tolerance.
1.3.2 Reference to ANSI Standards. ANSI Standards are available from the American National Standards Institute, 11 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036.
1.3.3 Tests Required. All Grades of stops and overhead holders are required to meet functional tests described in Section 2. All grades of overhead holders and stops are required to meet the applicable finish tests described in Section 3.
2. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Test Procedures
2.1.1 All tests shall be performed on doors 36 in x 84 in x 1-3/4 in (914 mm x 2134 mm x 44 mm) of either wood or metal and weighing 150 Ibs (68 kg). Use metal frames of heavy enough construction to withstand the abuse required by these tests. The center of gravity of the weighted door shall be 18 in (457 mm) from the center line of hinge or pivot.
2.1.2 Means for mechanically opening the door to the stop position and releasing and closing the door shall be provided for the tests. Opening speed shall be 0 to 90 degrees in 3 to 6 seconds.
2.1.3 Doors shall be hung on heavy weight ball bearing hinges or pivots meeting Grade 1 requirements of ANSIBHMA A156.1 for Butts and Hinges. Force required to overcome friction or out of balance condition shall be a 1/4 Ibf(1.1 N) or less measured in accordance with paragraph 2.1.4.
2.1.4 All forces shall be applied to the door and readings shall be taken at a point 30 in (762 mm) from center line of hinge or pivot at a height of 40 in (1016 mm) from the bottom of the door.
