4 DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this Standard, the following definitions apply:
4.1 Blast-furnace slag
A non-metallic product, consisting essentially of silicates and aluminosilicates of calcium, produced simultaneously within an iron blast-furnace.
4.2 Calcium sulfate
An inorganic material derived from gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate CaSO4 2H20), hemihydrate (CaSO4 ‘,4H20), or anhydrite (anhydrous calcium sulfate CaSO4), or as a by-product of industrial processes or any mixture of these materials.
4.3 Granulated blast-furnace slag
The glassy granular material resulting from the rapid quenching of molten iron blast-furnace slag then used in the manufacture of ground granulated blast-furnace slag.NOTE: Hereafter in this Standard, ‘Ground granulated blast-furnace slag’ is referred to as ‘slag’.
4.4 Other additions
Constituents, other than those defined in Clauses 4. 1 to 4.3, that are added in minor quantities, during the ground slag manufacturing process to aid the manufacture or improve the performance properties of slag.
4.5 Processing additions
Constituents, other than those defined in Clauses 4.1 to 4.3, that are added in quantities, nominally less than 1% by mass, during the manufacturing process to aid the manufacture or improve the handling properties of slag.
4.6 Proven source
Slag from a proven source means a material with a minimum of three (3) months of verifiable testing data in accordance with Clause 6.1.
4.7 Supplier
Entity responsible for the sale of the slag product.
4.8 Unproven source
Slag from an unproven source means a material with less than three (3) months of verifiable testing data in accordance with Clause 6.1.
5 PROPERTIES
Slag shall be characterized in accordance with the requirements of Table 1.
NOTES: I A certificate or statement showing the most recent test results obtained on a slag sample, representative of the type of slag being supplied, shall be provided on request (see Clause 11.3).
2 If alkali aggregate reaction is considered likely, the available alkali content may be required to be reported. The available alkali shall be determined in accordance with AS 3583.12. For further guidance, see HB 79.

6 PRODUCT CONFORMITY
6.1 General
Slag shall comply with the requirements of Table 1, when sampled and tested in accordance with Clauses 6.2 and 6.3. All records relating to product conformity shall be maintained in a form suitable for independent assessment.
6.2 Sampling
Methods of sampling slag shall be in accordance with AS/NZS 2350.1. All sampling shall be performed under the technical supervision of quality control personnel or trained personnel operating in accordance with a documented sampling procedure. All samples shall be grab samples of at least 200 g. Sampling frequency shall be as given in Table 2.
NOTE: Whichever is more frequent.
6.3 Testing
Testing shall be carried out in accordance with the reference methods specified in Table 1 and at frequencies specified in Table 2.
6.4 Material requirements
Slag sampled and tested in accordance with Clauses 6.2 and 6.3 shall comply with the limits set out in Table 1.
6.5 Additions
When requested, the supplier shall state if constituents other than water and those defined in Clauses 4. 1 to 4.3 are used in the manufacture of slag.
7 REFERENCE AND ALTERNATIVE TEST METHODS
7.1 Reference test methods
The limits given in Table I are based on the use of the appropriate reference test methods listed in that Table. The following determinations shall be conducted by the reference method, where required: Relative water and strength index shall be carried out using the reference test method AS 3583.6.(b) Total alkali and Available alkali shall only be carried out using the reference methods of AS 2350.2 and AS 3583.12 respectively.
7.2 Alternative test methods
Alternative methods of test may be used unless specifically excluded by Clause 7.1, provided that such methods have been validated by establishing that results do not differ from those produced by the methods referenced in this Standard by more than the amount given in Table 3. However, in any case of a dispute related to test results, determinations shall be conducted using the reference method.
8 RETESTING
Ifa sub-sample of slag fails to comply with any of the requirements of Table 1 when tested in accordance with relevant test method(s), the relevant test(s) shall be repeated on two further sub-samples of the sample. If the retest shows both these further portions comply with the relevant requirement(s), the quantity represented by the sample shall be deemed to comply with this Standard.
9 PACKING, DELIVERY AND MARKING OF BAGGED SLAG
9.1 Packing and delivery
Bagged slag shall be delivered in sound packages undamaged by moisture or other defects.
11 CERTIFICATION OF COMPLIANCE
11.1 General
When certification of compliance is requested, the following information shall be provided to the purchaser.
11.2 Test certificate
The test certificate is to include the results of the testing conducted in accordance with Table 1. NOTE: An example test certificate is provided in Appendix A.AS 3582.2 pdf download.
