Automotive ethanol (E85) fuel shall be free from any adulterant or contaminant that may render the fuel unacceptable for use in petrol engine vehicles designed to run on unleaded petrol and automotive ethanol (E85) fuel.
6.2 Constituents
Automotive ethanol (E85) fuel is constituted from a mixture of ethanol complying to EN 15376 and of market petrol product. The latter either complies to EN2Z8 or is a Blending Oxygenate Base-stock (BOB) that fulfils EJi22. after addition of ethanol.
6.3 Dyes and markers
The use of dyes and markers is allowed provided they do not cause harmful side effects to vehicles and fuel distribution systems.
NOTE In some markets dyes are also used or legally required as denaturants.
6.4 Additives
In order to improve the performance quality the use of additives is allowed. Suitable fuel additives without known harmful side effects are recommended in the appropriate amount, to help to avoid deterioration of driveability and emissions control durability. Other technical means with equivalent effect may also be used.
Conventional unleaded petrol fuel additives can show incompatibility with automotive ethanol (E85) fuel. Anti-corrosion additives can increase electrical conductivity of the product, depending on anti- corrosion additive used and starting point of ethanol.
NOTE Test methods for deposit forming tendency that are suitable for routine control purposes have not yet been identified and developed.
6.5 Phosphorus
In order to protect automotive catalyst systems, phosphorus-containing additives shall not be used in
automotive ethanol (E85) fuel.
6.6 Denaturants
The presence of petrol that conforms to EN 228 is generally considered sufficient to render automotive ethanol (E85) fuel a denatured product. If the presence of petrol is not recognized as a denaturant of automotive ethanol (E85) fuel by the relevant national authority, to avoid material compatibility issues with automotive engines and fuel systems, it is recommended to select denaturants from the list below that are known to be non-harmful to vehicle systems:
The concentration of denaturant(s) is at the discretion of national authorities, but the final automotive ethanol (E85) fuel shall still conform to the requirements as given in Table I and Table 2.
The recommendations of ASTM D4806 [4 regarding denaturants should be regarded.
6.7 Generally applicable requirements and test methods
6.7.1 Overall requirements
When tested by the methods indicated in Table i, automotive ethanoi Lh) tuel shall be in accoraance with the limits specified in Table 1. The test methods listed in Table 1 have been found applicable to automotive ethanol (E85) fuel, either by full assessment or by theoretical evaluation 151. In the first case, these findings have been validated by CEN [11).
Additional procedural requirements to be followed are indicated in Annex A.
For further information on preventing contamination in the supply chain or for cross-contamination it Is advisable to check CEN/TR 15367-2 and CEN/TR 15367-3 respectively [6, 7]. A determination method for high boiling components in unleaded petrol is available [101.
NOTE Details behind the considerations that have led to these requirements and test methods have been published by CEN 151.
6.7.2 Octane
The Research Octane Number (RON) of the automotive ethanol (E85) fuel is targeted at 104 at minimum, which is achieved when blended as recommended in this document. As the test method by which RON is to be measured, EN ISO 5164:2014, with the updates indicated in A.5. is to be assessed for application. this level should only be considered indicative.
The Motor Octane Number (MON) of the automotive ethanol (E85) fuel should be 88,0 at minimum, which Is normally achieved when blended as recommended in this document. As the test method by which MON is to be measured, EN ISO 5163:2014 with the required procedures indicated in A.5, Is assessed for application, this level should only be considered indicative.
