Management Algorithm for Prevention of Mother-to-child Transmission of Hepatitis B Virus (2022)

On May 2016, the World Health Assembly endorsed a Global Health Sector Viral Hepatitis Strategy (2016—2021), which put forth a goal of eliminating the public health threat of viral hepatitis by 2030, including reducing the new infection rate of viral hepatitis by 90% and the mortality rate by 65% in 2030 based on the 2015 data.’ Also, reducing the hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection rate of 5-year-old children to 0.1% was required. Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is a major route of transmitting HBV. Preventing MTCT of HBV is the key to eliminating HBV and strengthening standardized management of pregnant women with chronic HBV infections and their babies is an effective measure in eliminating MTCT of HBV. In recent years, strategies to eliminate viral hepatitis implemented in China and abroad have provided a favorable opportunity to eliminate MTCT of HBV.
