1 .0 SCOPE: This standard provides a method for the packaging of castings including investment, die,sand and permanent mold.
2.0 REFERENCES
2.1 General Packaging Standard NAS850
3.0 REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Requirements of General Packaging Standard NAS850 are a part of this standard except as noted herein.
3.2 Unit Packaging
3.2.1 The quantity per unit package shall be as follows, unless otherwise specified by the procurement document:
3.2.1 .1 Small Castings
Multiples of ten (1 0) not to exceed one hundred (1 00) items or 1 00 lbs. total net weight.
3.2.1 .2 Medium Castings
One (1 ) each or multiples of ten (1 0) not to exceed twenty (20) or 1 00 lbs. total net weight.
3.2.1 .3 Large Castings
One (1 ) each.
3.2.2 Wrap, bag, and/or cushion each item as required to protect all mating and/or critical surfaces, using material compatible with the item.
3.2.3 Wrapped or bagged items shall be packaged in a rigid container.
3.2.4 Large items shall be blocked and/or braced within the container, sufficient to protect and restrict movement of the item.
3.3 Intermediate Packaging
3.3.1 Intermediate packaging shall be in accordance with applicable requirements of NAS850.
3.4 Packing
3.4.1 Exterior packing shall be in accordance with applicable requirements of NAS850.
3.5 Marking
3.5.1 Unit, intermediate and exterior containers shall be marked in accordance with applicable requirements of NAS850.
3.5.2 Unit packages for precision castings shall have the following additional marking:
PRECISION CASTING
KEEP IN PACKAGE UNTIL READY FOR USE
3.5.3 Markings shall be located in (2) places, one end, one side.
4.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE
4.1 Packages which do not conform to these requirements are subject to rejection and return to supplier at his expense.
5.0 NOTES
5.1 Definitions
5.1 .1 Precision castings include investment and die castings and those that are cast to final close tolerance, .005 inch or less or surfaces RMS 64 or finer. Castings that have thin sections or projecting surfaces are also considered precision.
5.1 .2 Non-precision castings are all other castings and those normally produced by sand or permanent mold process.
