Section 3 Design and construction
3.1 Types
Ultrasonic cleaners shall be one of the following:
(a) Integrated into a washer-disinfector (for these ultrasonic cleaners, refer to Iso 15883 series).
(b) Built into bench system.
(c) Fixed console.
(d) Mobile.
3.2 Accessibility
Ultrasonic cleaners shall be accessible for installation, servicing and repairing.
Accessibility for maintenance and cleaning shall not present a health and safety risk to the person performing the tasks. For ultrasonic cleaners with an operational mass of more than 10 kg, a clearance underneath of not less than 100 mm shall be provided.
3.3 Supports
Built into bench and fixed console ultrasonic cleaners shall be mounted in a manner that enables height adjustment, or a fixed height at no greater than 900 mm. Mobile ultrasonic cleaners shall be mounted on swivel castors with brakes or other devices to anchor the machine during use.
3.4 External panels
External panels and surfaces shall be accessible for cleaning and able to be removed for maintenance purposes. External panels and surfaces shall be free from scratches, blemishes, burrs and sharp edges. Provision shall be made to allow for cleaning underneath the ultrasonic cleaners. For ultrasonic cleaners with an operational mass of less than 10 kg, handles or recessed hand holds shall be provided for moving the cleaner. Where any panel is constructed from more than one section, visible joints shall be flush.
3.5 Cabinet tops
Cabinet tops shall be at a working height of no greater than 900 mm or be level with any abutting bench tops. Cabinet tops shall be isolated from cleaning tanks by a suitable gasket that reduces vibration to a minimum. Cabinet tops of console-type ultrasonic cleaners shall be dished to allow splashed liquid to drain back into the tank. Where a splashback is fitted, it shall be at a minimum of 300 mm high. NOTE Splashbacks should also act as a stop for the lid. The top of mobile ultrasonic cleaners shall have a raised edge to contain liquid, and allow any liquid to drain back into the tank. The working level of ultrasonic cleaners shall not be more than 1 200 mm above the floor, i.e. bench height plus height of ultrasonic cleaner.
3.6 Lids
Lids shall be provided to enclose the tanks when the process is in operation. Lids shall be fitted with a seal to contain moisture, prevent aerosols from escaping from the operating tank and prevent excess noise emission. Lids fitted with a hinged mechanism shall not require a force by the operator to lift the lid to exceed 150 N. Lift-off lids shall fit securely on the tank and prevent excess noise emission. The ultrasonic cleaner shall have systems to prevent it operating until the lid is closed or in place for lift off lids.
3.7 Hinges
Hinges, hinge supports and lid stops shall not be damaged during regular use.
3.8 Tanks
3.8.1 Provision
Ultrasonic cleaners shall be provided with a cleaning tank. Ultrasonic cleaners may also be provided with a rinsing tank, including jet ports to spray and completely rinse the load. They may also be provided with a method to dry equipment. The internal dimensions of the cleaning tank shall be suitable for cleaning articles being processed. NOTE 1 The tank should have a length to width ratio of 3:2.
NOTE 2 The whole of the internal space of the tanks is not available for use, because of the space taken up by loading baskets, racks or trays, and the clearances required for loading equipment.
3.8.2 Fabrication
The surfaces of fabricated tanks shall not buckle due to the welding process. Internal welded joints shall be smooth, without sharp edges or crevices. The thickness of sheet metal used to manufacture cleaning tanks shall be not less than — (a) 0.6 mm for deep drawn tanks; and (b) 1.2 mm for fabricated tanks. NOTE Tanks with a lesser thickness have been shown to have insufficient durability.
3.8.3 Working depth
The working depth of cleaning solution in the tanks shall be not less than the total of—(a) 25 mm clearance below the trays; (b) maximum working height of loaded trays; and (c) 20 mm clearance above the trays.AS 2773 pdf download.
