4 CLASSIFICATION
Lifejackets are classified by application and performance levels as follows:
(a) Level 275 This level is intended primarily for offshore use and by people who are carrying significant additional weights (such as tools and equipment) and thus require extra buoyancy. It is also of value to those who are wearing clothing which traps air and which may adversely affect the self-righting capacity of the lifejacket. It is designed to assist the wearer to float in a face-up position with the mouth and nose clear of the surface.
(b) Level 150 This level is intended for general and offshore use. It is designed to assist in turning an unconscious person into a face-up position.
(c) Level 100 This level is the minimum requirement for coastal use and is intended for general use on water where the shore is in view, It is designed to assist in turning a person into a face-up position.
(d) Level 50 This level is intended for use by those who are able swimmers and who are near to bank or shore, or who have help and a means of rescue close at hand. They are not designed to assist in turning the wearer into a face-up position. They require active participation by the wearer.
(e) Level 50S This level is intended for use by those who are able swimmers and who are near to bank or shore, or who have help and a means of rescue close at hand. They are not designed to assist in turning the wearer into a face-up position. They require active participation by the wearer. This lifejacket can be of any colour.
(f) Level 25 This level is designed for use by competent swimmers for specific specialist activities such as sporting and competitive situations and who are near to a bank or shore, or who have help and a means of rescue close at hand. They are not designed to assist in turning the wearer into a face-up position. They require active participation by the wearer.
(g) Restricted use li/i/ackets These are special purpose devices manufactured for groups such as the military, police, rescue and emergency services and the like for specific needs that go beyond the requirements of the recreational wearer. These rely on the specialized skills, knowledge, training and participation of the wearer.
5 MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS
5.1 General Unless otherwise specified, structural materials and components used in the manufacture of lifejackets shall comply with the requirements given in AS 4758.2.
5.2 Positive locking devices Security of fit to the wearer shall be achieved by the use of positive locking device/s to fasten all straps and tapes. Tie tapes, lacing, ‘D’ ring and similar fastening types shall not be used for security of fit of the lifejacket to the wearer.
6 REQUIREi’iENTS
6.1 Test facility accreditation
Laboratories performing the tests in the AS 4758 series of Standards shall be accredited for such tests by signatories to the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) through their Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA). NOTE: In Australia, ILAC (MRA) accredited bodies include National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA).
6.2 Corrosion resistance
When the structural metal components are tested in a neutral salt spray in accordance with ISO 9227 for 96 h there shall be no evidence of corrosion.
6.3 Magnetic properties
When metal components of a lifejacket are placed not more than 500 mm from a floating- card magnetic compass of a type used in small boats the deflection of the compass shall be not greater than 10.
6.4 Water resistance
When a lifejacket is tested for resistance to water in accordance with AS 4758.3 there shall not be any deterioration or structural damage as assessed by visual and aural examination and it shall meet the buoyancy claimed by the manufacturer.
6.5 Resistance to oil
When a lifejacket is tested for resistance to oil in accordance with AS 4758.3, it shall not show any signs of damage, such as shrinking, cracking, swelling, dissolution or change in mechanical properties and it shall meet the buoyancy claimed by the manufacturer.AS 4758.1 pdf download.
