ASME PTC 4:1998 pdf download Fired Steam Generators
1.2 SCOPE
1.2.1 General Scope. The rules and instructions presented in this Code apply to fired steam generatorsThese include coal, oil, and gas fired steam generatorsas well as steam generators fired by other hydrocarbonfuels. The scope also includes steam generators withintegral fuel-sulfur capture utilizing chemical sorbents.Steam generators which are not fired by coal, oil,or gas may be tested using the concepts of this Code, but it should be noted that the uncertainty caused byvariability of the fuel may be difficult to determineand is likely to be greater than the uncertainties insampling and analysis of coal, oil, or gas.
Gas turbine heat recovery and other heat recoverysteam generators designed to operate with supplementalfiring should be tested in accordance with PerformanceTest Code (PTC) 4.4,Gas Turbine Heat RecoverySteam Generators.
This Code does not apply to nuclear steam supplysystems, which are specifically addressed in PTC 32.1Nuclear Steam Supply Systems. This Code does notapply to the performance testing of chemical heatrecovery steam generators, municipal waste fired steamgenerators, pressurized steam generators with gas sidepressure greater than S atmospheres, or incinerators.Municipal waste fired steam generators can be testedin accordance with PTC 34.Waste Combustors withEnergy Recovery.
Testing of auxiliary equipment is not addressed inthis Code, but shall be governed by the followingPerformance Test Codes which apply specifically tothe equipment in question:
PTC 4.2, Coal Pulverizers.
PTC 4.3,Air Heaters.
PTC 11, Fans.
Steam purity and quality shall be tested in accordancewith PTC 19.11, Water and Steam in the Power Cycle(Purity and Quality, Leak Detection and Measurement). Methods used by this Code for determining emissionrelated parameters, e.g., sulfur retention and fue gasconstituents, are not equivalent to methods required byEPA,New Stationary Source Performance Standards,40CFR60 and are not intended to be used for evaluatingcompliance with those standards or any other environ-mental regulations.
This Code does not prescribe procedures for testingto determine chemical and physical properties of fuels.Applicable procedures may be found in the PTC 3 seriesor other pertinent standards such as those published byASTM.
This Code specifically addresses equipment used forthe generation of steam; however, the basic principlespresented are also applicable to other working fuids.Certain types and sizes of equipment used for therecovery of heat released by combustion are not ad-dressed in any specific Performance Test Code. ThisCode can be used as a general guide in developingperformance tests for such equipment; however, suchspecially developed performance tests shall not beconsidered ASME Code tests.
1.2.2 Design Variations. This Code provides generalprocedures for conducting combustible fuel fired steamgenerator performance tests; however,it cannot possiblyprovide detailed procedures applicable to every steamgenerator design variation. Design variations consideredin developing this Code include subcritical and supercrit-ical once-through steam generators and oil, gas, stokercyclone, pulverized, and fluidized bed firing. For eachperformance test, a competent engineer must study theactual steam generator and its relation to the remainderof the steam cycle, and develop test procedures whichare consistent with this Code.
1.2.3 Reports. A test report shall be prepared. SeeSection 6.
1.2.4 References. Many references provide useful supplemental information in planning for a performancetest in accordance with this Code. Those used mostfrequently are listed in Section 3.3.
