This Section contains technical definitions used in thisCode, and symbols and subscripts used in the equations
2-1 DEFINITIONS
absorption dynamontefer: device that may be connectedto the output shaft of a prime mover in place of thedriven load, which absorbs the output of the primemover while transmitting the torque to a stationarymember where it can be measured accurately.Accuraci: closeness of agreement between a measuredvalue and the true value.
acid gas: contaminants in the syngas, consisting of hydrogen sulfide (HS),carbonyl sulfide (COS) and carbondioxide (CO) Acid gas may also refer to a concentratedstream of one or more of these components.
acid gas rernomal process: process that removes one or moreof the acid gas components from the syngas, also referredto as the gas cleanup process. NH, HCN and HCl haveseveral and varied methods of removal, such as a waterwash, which goes to subsequent water cleanup beforedischarge. See ambient temperature acid gas remoual processcold acid gas removal process, and hot acid gas removalprocess.
additive: substance added to a gas, liquid, or solid streamto cause a chemical or mechanical reaction to enhancecollection efficiency.
aftercooler: heat exchanger for cooling a fluid, followingthe last stage of compression.
agglomerating ash gasifier: type of fluid-bed gasifier thatcontains a hot zone in which the ash particles areagglomerated into small pellets for removal.
air, correcfed theoretical: theoretical air adjusted forunburned carbon and additional oxygen required tocomplete other reactions, i.e., the sulfation reaction.
air, excess: air supplied to burn a fuel in addition to theminimum necessary for complete combustion. Excessair is expressed as a percentage of the corrected theoreti-cal air in this Code.
air, infilfration: influx of air into the steam generatorenvelope.
air, fheoretical: amount of air required to supply the exactamount of oxygen necessary for complete combustionof a given quantity of fuel. Theoretical air and stoichiometric air are synonymous.
air-blown gasifier: gasification process in which the oxi-dizing agent is supplied as air rather than oxygen.air integrated air separation unit: air separation processthat receives all, or a part of, the total air feed require-ment by extraction of a portion of the compressed airfrom the gas turbine.
air pretreatment: a unit that removes water, carbon diox-ide, and some hydrocarbon contaminants from the com-pressed air stream prior to processing in the cryogenicsections of the ASU. Pretreatment is usually based on acyclical,adsorption/desorption (molecular sieve)based, ambient temperature process using heated, dry nitrogenproduced by the ASU for regeneration of the adsorbent.ambient air: this Code recognizes that significant differences in both the measured and corrected performancesmay result, depending upon what physical location(s)is used to represent the contract ambient, design ambient, and test ambient air conditions. Because contractuallanguage may not always resolve the meaning of ambient, this Code requires the parties to the test to agreeprior to the test upon which location(s) will be usedto represent the ambient air condition. For example, ambient conditions may be considered to be the averageof several different locations within the boundary of thesite or may be the physical air inlet of equipment suchas the gas turbine or the cooling tower. Once the partieshave agreed upon the representative location(s) theword ambient as used in the Code shall mean the physi-cal properties of the air at that location(s).
