3. Definitions, acronyms and abbreviations
3.1 Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply. The IEEE StandardsDictionary Online should be consulted for terms not defined in this clause.
active carrier: A data bearing carrier in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol.
active tones: Tones that carry data (pilot tones and dummy bit tones are not included).
address: Property that universally identifies a node.
alternate personal area network (PAN) coordinator: A coordinator that is capable of replacing the PANcoordinator if the PAN coordinator leaves the network for any reason. A PAN can have zero or morealternate PAN coordinators.
association: The service used to establish membership for a device in a network
band plan: A contiguous set of frequencies that can be used in groups (bands) by the system.
beacon-enabled personal area network (PAN): A PAN in which all coordinators emit regular beacons.
i.e., have beacon order < 0x0F. block cipher: A cryptographic function that operates on strings of fixed size. block size: The size, in bits, of the strings on which a block cipher operates. byte: In this standard the term byte is synonymous with the preferred term, octet. The use of byte innormatively referenced material and parameter names has been preserved. carrier: In orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) one of usually a large number offrequencies that are independently modulated to carry information. contention access period (CAP): The period of time immediately following a beacon frame during whichdevices wishing to transmit compete for channel access using a slotted carrier sense multiple access withcollision avoidance (CSMA/CA)mechanism. contention access period (CAP) symbol: A symbol period occurring during the CAP. coordinator: A device capable of relaying messages. If a coordinator is the principal controller of apersonal area network (PAN), it is called the PAN coordinator. coprime: Two integers that have no common positive divisor other than 1 or, equvalently, if their greatestcommon divisor is 1.(For example, 14 and 15 are coprime, but 14 and 21 are not, because they are bothdivisible by 7. The numbers 1 and -1 are coprime to every integer, and they are the only integers to becoprime with 0). data authentication: The process whereby an entity receiving a message corroborates evidence about thetrue source of the information in the message and, thereby, evidence that the message has not beenmodified in transit. data authenticity: Assurance about the source of information. destination node: A node that receives a frame device: Any entity containing an implementation of the IEEE 1901.2-2013 medium access control (MAC)and a physical interface to the physical medium. encryption: The transformation of a message into a new representation so that privileged information isrequired to recover the original representation. frame: A collection of data treated as a unit. Generally a frame is the unit that is transmitted over themedium or between logical entities in the reference model feg., a service access point (SAP)1 Examplesinclude MAC service data unit (MSDU), PHY protocol data unit (PPDU), beacon frame, etc. frame check sequence (FCS): The bits added to the end of a frame to enable error detection. G3-PLC: A specification for power line communications (PLC) in the CENELEC A band, defined by theG3-PLC Alliance(ITU-T G.9903) group key: A key that is shared by the set (group) of authenticated nodes. idle period: An interval of time where no transceiver activity is scheduled to take place. key establishment: A process whereby two or more parties establish a key.
