Terms and definitionsFor the purposes of this PAS, the terms and definitions givenin BS 6068-1.2 (SO 6107-2) and the following apply-
3.1analytical recovery standardcompound added to sampling device receiving phase prior to analysisand whose recovery levels during analysis are used to provideinformation about recovery efficiency
3.2fabrication controlquality control sampling device to record contamination from themanufacturing process, sampling device components, laboratorystorage, processing and analytical procedures
3.3field controlquality control sampling device to record any chemical accumulated insampling devices during transportation, deployment and retrieval
3.4passive samplingcollection of chemical compounds without provision of energy from anexternal source
3.5priority pollutantsubstance which is a potential source of water pollutionNOTE A list ofpriority pollutants is given in the EU Water FrameworkDirective (2..
3.6performance reference compound (PRC)compound that has moderate to high fugacity from the sampling device.which does not interfere with the sampling and analytical processes andwhich is added to the device receiving phase prior to deployment
NOTE 1 The off-loading (elimination) rates of the PRCs are used toprovide information about in situ uptake kinetics.
NOTE 2 Currently there are no PRCs available for metals samplingdevices.
3.7reagent controlretained aliquot of reagent used in preparation and analysis of samplingdevices which is analysed with the samples in order to diagnose anycontamination from the reagents used
3.8 recovery spike
quality control sampling device, pre-spiked with known mass ofcompounds of interest, used to determine the recovery levels of targetcompounds from processed sampling devices to establish control limitsfor the analytical process
3.9sampling device classclass of target analytes which a sampling device is designed toaccumulate
NOTE Sampling device classes include the following.
Dolarorqanac conDounas.
non-polar organic compounds; and
inorganic compounds,including melals.
3.10shipping control (optional)quality control sampling device to record any contamination or changesduring transportation and storage of sampling devices on their way toand from the manufacturer to the user and from the user to theaboratory that performs the preparation of sampling devices foranalysis
