1 Scope
1.1 These requirements apply to household, commercial, and professional-use carts, stands, and shelvesintended to provide a surface for structural support of audio/video equipment. Home entertainment centersnot provided with a work surface such as a desktop or keyboard shelf and intended to support audio/videoequipment are covered by this standard.

1.2 These requirements do not apply to products covered by the Standard for Household and CommerciaFurnishings, UL 962, such as products intended to provide a surface for structural support of informationtechnology equipment.

1.3 These requirements do not apply to carts and similar structures having a shelf that is more than 39.37inches (1 m) above the floor and are intended for use in schools, institutions, hospitals, or like locationswhere children are able to move them. These products are covered by the Standard for Tall institutionaCarts and Stands for Use with Audio-, Video-, and Television-Type Equipment, UL 1667
1.4 These requirements do not apply to a cart or stand provided with a specific product. Suchcombinations are to comply with the applicable requirements of the product standard.
1.5 These requirements do not apply to any electrical circuitry integral to or provided with a cart or standThe requirements of the standard covering the intended electrical product to be used with a cart or standshall be applicable to any electrical circuits in the cart or stand. Electrical devices shall comply with therequirements for such devices. For example, attachment plugs and receptacles shall comply with therequirements in the Standard for Attachment Plugs and Receptacles, UL 498. Where the requirements ofmore than one standard are applicable, the most severe requirements shall apply.
1.6 The phrase “cart or stand”, where used in this standard, generically references any productconsidered under the scope of these requirements.
2 Glossary
2.1 For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply!
2.2 CART – A stand (see 2.7) provided with casters, wheels, or rollers intended to make it mobile
2.3 DEDICATED STORAGE AREA – An area of a cart or stand intended to accommodate specificaccessories such as media tapes and discs.
2.4 NORMAL USE – Those operations performed by the user to utilize a fully assembled cart or stand,with or without products installed. Normal use includes but is not limited to:
a) Installation or removal of products on a cart or stand
b) Interconnection and adjustment of products.
c)Opening and closing of drawers, doors, shelves, and similar movable or adjustable parts
d) Cleaning of products and a cart or stand.
