AS 2726.1 specifies safety requirements for portable, hand-held, electrically driven and
internal combustion engine-driven chainsaws primarily intended for cutting wood.
This Standard does not apply to—
(a) pole-mounted powered pruners:
(b) hydraulic chainsaws;
(c) attachments fitted to chainsaws: or
(d) mechanical aids assisting the task of cutting wood.
6 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
6.1 General
The safe operation of chainsaws depends on both the safety requirements specified in this Standard and the safe environment associated with the use of adequate personal protection equipment (PPE).
Chainsaws shall comply with the safety requirements specified in this Standard. In addition. the machine shall be designed according to the principles of ISO 12100-I for hazards relevant but not significant. which are not dealt with in this Standard (e.g. sharp edges).
6.2 Chainsaw assemblies and mating parts
Chainsaw assemblies and mating parts shall be within the relevant tolerances of’ their original design.
6.3 Security of chainsaw assemblies
Clamped. bolted or secured devices should be positive in action and not subject to rapid wear. Bolts and nuts shall be tightened to the torque values recommended by the manufacturer.
When determined in accordance with ISO 6535, the chain brake release force shall be between 20 N and 60 N and the average braking time shall not be greater than 0.12 s and the maximum braking time shall not be greater than 0.1 5 s.
There also shall be a non-manual chain brake system complying with ISO 13772.
For chainsaws with internal combustion engine displacement tip to 80 cm3 and electric chainsaws, the computed kickback angle or chain stop angle determined in accordance with ISO 95 18. whichever is the lesser, shall be not more than 45 degrees.
NOTE: Sufficient information to set a limit for chainsaws with an engine capacity greater than
80 cm3 is not available.
7.2 Chain catcher
C’hainsaws shall be fitted with chain catchers complying with ISO 10726.
7.3 Marking of controls
Controls shall be clearly identified by attached labels or inherent markings.
7.4 Handles
Chainsaws shall have a handle for each hand. These handles shall be designed so that they can be fully gripped by an operator when wearing protective gloves and provide the necessary sureness of grip by their shaping and surface. The dimensions and clearances shall be in accordance with ISO 7914.
The operator shall be able to stop the chainsaw in a controlled manner with the stopping device, even in the event of failure of any vibration isolation system.
When tested in accordance with Iso 7915 the handles shall not crack or break.
7.5 Hand protection
7.5.1 Protection alt/u? front iiaiidle
A guard shall be fitted in the vicinity of the front handle to protect the operator’s fingers from injury by contact with the saw chain.
The dimensions of the front hand guard shall be in accordance with ISO 6533.
7.5.2 Protection a! the rear ha?dIL’
A hand guard shall be provided along the length of the right side of the bottom of the rear handle. This guard shall extend from the right edge of the handle for at least 30 mm at the guide bar side and not less than 100 mm lengthwise (see Figure 2).
