UL 705-BULLETINS:2004 pdf download Standards Technical Panel for Electric Fans, STP 507; Subscribers to UL’s Standards Services for Electric Fans, UL 507
DISCUSSION
The draft proposal distributed with the meeting agenda was discussed. The STP expressed concernover the type of metals listed as acceptable in the proposal. A suggestion was made to replace the fourtypes of metals stated in the proposal with just “metal” or perhaps “painted metal”. Several STPmembers commented on the fact that the original Rationale included with the agenda indicated that thefan duct adapters in question effectively serve as the overall product fire enclosure. The STP was inagreement that this was a misleading statement, as duct adapters and the overall cooking areaventilating products are not considered fire protection equipment.
Due to the amount of discussion on this topic, the Chair indicated that UL would consider modifying theproposal relative to the types of metals indicated, and that the proposal would then be distributed tothe STP for comment only at this time – no ballot. The STP supported this approach.
RATIONALE
Presently, there is no specific requirement covering fan duct adaptors. In the past, UL has allowed theusage of duct adapters molded of polymeric materials rated HB within cooking area fans. UL is solicitingcomments on a draft proposal to revise UL 507 so that it would require a construction of painted metalfor the following reasons:
1) This component assists in the prevention of exhaust air entry into a concealed space of abuilding structure, preventing contact of grease laden air with electrical wiring.
2) Section 1502 of the lnternational Residential Code and Section 505 of the lnternationalMechanical Code mandates that only ducting constructed of these materials can be used forthis application.
3) Due to the exhaust opening in the product enclosure, this adapter is effectively serving as apart of the overall product enclosure.
DRAFT PROPOSAL
(Note: The following draft proposal is for comment only at this time. lt is not part of the ANSI ballot inAppendix C. Comments on this draft proposal can be submitted with comments on the ballotedproposals.
(NEW)
91.2.2 The duct-connection fitting or adaptor for a fan utilized in cooking areas shall be constructed ofpainted metal.
6.TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS FOR PLUGS AND RECEPTACLES
DISCUSSION
The draft proposal distributed with the meeting agenda was discussed. Plugs and receptacles aretypically investigated separately as recognized components and are required by the componentstandard (UL 498) to employ materials with relative thermal index ratings (RTI) of 60 and 80 C respectively. In most applications, these RTIs are acceptable. However, when these plugs and receptacles are employed within products possessing a lighting component, the additional heat generated can result in component temperatures in excess of 100 °C.
