Scope
1.1 These requirements cover electrically heated blankets, comforters, quilts, sheets, mattress padsmattresses, foot warmers, throw blankets and similar bedding.

1.1.1 These products are for use in accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, onsingle-phase alternating-current supply circuits operating at a nominal potential of 110 to 120 V ac.Added 1.1.1 effective April 18.2006
1.2 All bedding is cord-connected and is supplied with either a switch or one or two user-adjustabletemperature-control units. Bedding may be thermostatically controlled.
1.3 Bedding intended for connection to other than a nominal 120 V ac supply voltage, and bedding foruse with waterbeds, mechanical beds and the like, are to be subject to additional investigation, withconsideration given to their intended use.

2 Glossary
2.1 For the purposes of this Standard, the following definition applies.2.1 added April 30,1999
2.2 SEMICONDUCTOR HEATER WIRE – A heating element consisting of two conductors separatedby a conductive material which has a rapid non-linear increase in resistance when the temperature israised through a particular range.

2.3 THROW BLANKET – An electric blanket intended for use in indoor locations but not specifically foruse only on beds. Electric throw blankets are typically smaller in overall size than blankets intended foruse on beds. The length is typically less than 75 in (109.5 cm) and/r the width is typically less than 38inch (96.5 cm)

2.4 CLASS 2 SUPPLY – A secondary circuit supplied by a Class 2 power supply that complies with theStandard for Class 2 Power Units,UL 1310.

3 Components
3.1 Except as indicated in 3.2, a component of a product covered by this standard shall comply with therequirements for that component. See Appendix A for a list of standards covering components generallyused in the products covered by this Standard.
3.2 A component is not required to comply with a specific requirement that:
a) lnvolves a feature or characteristic not required in the application of the component in theproduct covered by this standard, or
b) ls superseded by a requirement in this standard.
3.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for the intended conditions ofuse
3.4 Specific components are incomplete in construction features or restricted in performance capabilitiesSuch components are intended for use only under limited conditions, such as certain temperatures notexceeding specified limits, and shall be used only under those specific conditions.
4 Units of Measurement
4.1 Values stated without parentheses are the requirement. Values in parentheses are explanatory orapproximate information.
5 References
5.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this standard shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.
CONSTRUCTION
6 Covering of Electrical Parts
6.1 Except for the connector attached to the bedding, all electrical parts of the bedding shall be enclosedin a shell or other covering of a fabric in which there are no openings. All stuffing, padding, springs, andsimilar nonelectrical components of bedding shall be outside this covering and shall not be detrimental tothe covering or its electrical contents.
6.2 All seams in the fabric enclosing electrical parts shall be strongly stitched or otherwise equivalentlysecured.
